Meet a Mentor FAQ

If you still have questions, please see our FAQ below, or if you came here to sign up you can do so here:

The initiative was initially founded in 2012 as a way to introduce developers to people that had faced similar challenges or questions, in the past, to speak to for advice and guidance. You can see a video of Barry presenting this on the Skills Matter website.

For several years the initiative was run through events however as of April 2017 the introductions have been made through a Slack group.

How does it work?

When you sign up for the group you will be asked questions about the type of mentors you would most like to meet. Once you have joined you will be introduced to mentors that we believe would be the best match. If we do not have mentors within our mentor directory then we will try to reach out to our wider network.

Who is it for?

The group is aimed at aspiring, current and veteran Java/JVM software developers that are looking to progress in their careers. Anyone from students to CTOs. Some examples of past mentees:

– Senior developers wondering what to do next
– Senior developers looking for advice on how to become a tech lead or CTO
– Developers in a permanent job looking to get advice on how to get into contracting
– Students wondering how to get your first job
– Junior developers struggling with a particular technology

Who are the mentors?

Our mentor directory has mentors from a vast array of industries and companies. Large tech companies including Facebook and Amazon, banks including Goldman Sachs and UBS and many of London’s most exciting startups. If you are interested in becoming a mentor just sign up at this link:

“The biggest positive outcome from this was getting honest, quality advice from professionals that was also practical. One I would not get in the classroom. It was also personalised to me (I got my CV checked by professionals and gained an insight into how THEY think about candidates which helped me in my interviews).”

“I’ve managed to speak to everyone who Barry set me up with and things are running smoothly. I’d like to say that this is a brilliant initiative and want to thank you, Barry & rest of the team for doing this! Working in a small company early on it can be difficult to connect with people in our industry past meetups and other events. This is a great medium to keep the conversation going.”

“Just wanted to say a huge thank you for introducing me to (Name removed). We just met for the first time (we exchanged a few emails and then I was on holiday so it got a bit delayed) but I’m sure there will be many more meetings. We have SO much in common!”

“This mentoring program is really impressive, just after sign in I had a talk with Barry that helped me to clean up my doubts about next steps in my career, just after this talk, he put me in touch with guys that are really into what I’m looking for, that are pointing me the right paths. I couldn’t imagine that this community or that so high level professionals could be so receptive and helpful, honestly, I’m really grateful for this opportunity.”

“People asking the right questions make me think twice about problems that I usually solve “without thinking”, it helps me consolidate my knowledge. Seeing how the mentees progress is priceless.”
