I’ll start with a job for junior and mid-level Java/Scala developers with strong problem solving skills and the desire to work with artificial intelligence and machine learning techniques. Salary is in the range 35-50K. It’s with an enterprise search tech firm that uses innovative techniques around AI, big data and machine learning in order to digest complex information quickly for their clients. They are growing rapidly and they are looking for highly talented software engineers to join the team.
In this role you will add new features and continually improve one of their core products using a mixture of Java, Scala and modern web technologies. You will also help refactor the existing code base and improve the test coverage using TDD/BDD. You’ll need to have a strong academic background (minimum 2.1 in Computer Science) as well as knowledge of Java and OO design, knowledge of data structures, Spring or Play and a genuine interest in AI, machine learning, natural language processing and big data, which are all central to this role.
Of course, it’s not just the work that needs to appeal – the company culture needs to be a good fit too. I can tell you that this company has a very young, dynamic and socially collaborative culture, which includes regular social nights out, brown bag sessions, and after work drinks. They are firm believers in self-improvement at every level and provide frequent and extensive training on both soft and technical skills.

We also have some great senior roles…
If you have 5+years commercial experience including Java8 or NodeJS, an interest in big data, IoT and RESTful webservices/APis I’m sure this role will interest you. It’s in a privately funded pre-series A startup with some big plans for the future. They’ve created a brand new smart, IoT device that tracks household energy usage against the market and then finds, recommends and automatically switches you to the most cost effective energy supplier. Their software also provides their customers with insights about their energy usage along with recommendations to save money.
The part you’ll play in the company is as a hands-on software engineer – the 2nd technical hire within the team. Your main responsibilities will be around greenfield development, architecture design, testing and deployment of a large scale data analytics platform whilst taking their MVP to production. The current codebase has a serverless architecture which was developed by ThoughtWorks in NodeJS and Java8 on top of AWS/Terraform, but you’ll also be using technologies such as Clojure, Python and GO to solve technical problems as they arise. The company is pragmatic when it comes to development: best practices are important to maintain code quality and readability but there will also be times when they need to ship code quickly. Salary: 60-70k.
Are you a Java Developer with experience in building high-performing, scalable, enterprise-grade systems? Does the opportunity to be part of a talented software team that works on mission-critical applications appeal to you? We have a senior Java developer role which involves undertaking Java / Java EE application development while providing expertise in the full software development lifecycle, from concept and design to testing. You will be one of the most senior members of the technical team, so there is a real opportunity for this to become a leadership role. You will work very closely with the experienced and successful CTO whose track record includes running and selling a 250 person business. You’ll have considerable autonomy in your work and the opportunity to implement and champion best practice techniques.
Here’s a little background on the company. They are an ambitious startup in the finance sector and they have developed a finance solution that provides their customers with a revolving credit facility to make payments to their suppliers. They work with leading customers that don’t want their growth constrained by lack of working capital.
There are currently 10 people in the business and they are looking to grow their tech team at their recently opened London office. Salary up to 90k.
Our next top job is an opportunity for a senior Java developer who has a TDD mindset and strong OO design skills ideally using Core Java, E-Trading domain knowledge with exposure to fixed income, derivatives, commodities, currencies… You’ll also need to be comfortable interacting with customers and happy working in an Agile/XP environment. This role could really appeal to a developer who values being able to contribute to Open Source software, as the team try to Open Source as many of their tools as possible.
This role is with a eTrading tech company that provides solutions for the fixed income and derivatives markets, founded by former LMAX developers. The role involves working with high-profile customers to make sure you meet or exceed their throughput and latency requirements. Developers will have the chance to do greenfield development in an environment which mirrors that of LMAX so you’ll have the immediate opportunity to work in a true agile/XP environment where you’ll be encouraged to test-drive your code properly. They have a CI/CD system already in place and they deploy high quality code after every 2-week iteration.
The company is currently focused on the fixed income space, with plans to move into currency and one final thing to mention is that the company culture includes flexible working and the opportunity to work from home. Salary 90-100k.
Last but definitely not least we have an opportunity that only rarely comes along: for a very experienced CTO/Director or ‘Head of” to take their career to next level, namely as a hands-off Director of Engineering. This job will suit someone who has a background of strong agile and software engineering experience, who has led a team of at least 10 people and has hiring experience.
The opportunity is in a startup environment as part of a top global tech company. You’ll be leading a team with a strong and diverse culture and you’ll be a true leader, inspiring and supporting professional growth for the engineering team and fostering an open, collaborative and innovative work environment. You’ll collaborate closely with the product team and influence long term strategy, product roadmap and execution.
This role could lead to very big things and a deeply satisfying career as they have a strong vision for the future, the momentum to succeed and the backing of one of the most prestigious technology companies in the world. There is a great company culture of inclusion, respect, high expectations of others and mutual support. They also offer flexible working as they are not prescriptive on working hours, just business outcomes. They encourage people to work from home 1 day a week. On top of this they have wonderful, bright, offices in Shoreditch, with bike racks (and shower!), right next to Liverpool St and Shoreditch High Street stations for super easy commuting.
