At RecWorks we are currently looking for Junior Account Executives to join our team and this has inspired us to offer some advice to those looking for an entry level position. We believe that you should stop and think about these four key points early in your job search – whatever the sector you are applying for.
Key points to consider:
1. Work with good mentors
2. Find a company in which you can grow and develop
3. Find a company that taps into your passions and interests
4. Join the right team
1. Work with good mentors
Mentors are extremely important in your first role. It’s crucial that the first company you work for has a strong position on mentoring and will have people prepared to guide you through the challenges that you will face. You want to make sure that you are working with people that have achieved great things and experienced a lot of success, as they will be the people you are initially learning from. They are the ones that will take you further throughout your career. If you find truly great mentors they will stick with you the rest of your career.
TIP: When you are interviewing with a company try to get a good understanding of how much mentoring is done within a business. Find out who the people are that you will learn from. Make sure those people are personally interested in your development.
@RecWorks: Mentoring is central to our training programme. When you first start, you will be assigned a mentor who will show you the ropes and guide you through the position, working closely with you to ensure that you learn as much as possible. At RecWorks we have a team of extremely successful consultants who will all proactively contribute to your development: you will sit down weekly with your team lead who will discuss how you’re doing and assist with your development.
2. Join a company in which you can grow and develop
As it’s your first role, you want to learn new skills and develop yourself as quickly as possible so that you can be a valuable member of the team. You also want to make sure that there are positions in front of you that you can work toward when you do develop yourself. This way you will know that the company will be involved in your development at every stage.
TIP: Ask questions about your route of progression within a company – what would your next job be? And the one after that? Where will you be in 2 years?
@RecWorks: We are seeking to grow a large and successful team from entry level recruits, as quickly as possible. We want to recruit, train and retain the best consultants in London which means we are highly invested in your personal development. We want to train you to become a manager/leader within our business as quickly as possible so that you can take our business in new directions. There is unlimited opportunity within this market and we are at an early stage of growth so there is true potential for you to be the next future leader of RecWorks.

3. Join a company that taps into your passions and interests
The best thing you can do in your career is find a company that taps into your passions and interests. For example, if you are interested in tech, business, social media or are just an ambitious/competitive person then the chances are you will enjoy a career in tech recruitment. If you are not in any way interested in what a company does or how they do it then the chances are you will be wasting time, treading water for a few years until something else comes along.
TIP: Consider what you’re personally interested in and make sure the company is in some way related to your personal interests.
@RecWorks: There is a lot to be passionate about. We are looking for people that are interested in any of the following: technology, business, social media, social networks, problem solving, persuasion, startups, entrepreneurship, talent, web. If you’re interested in any of these areas but not sure quite what your place is in the market then it could be worth considering a career in tech recruitment. With the development of social media, the industry is evolving into something new: a new breed of recruitment companies are emerging that combine recruitment with social networks to tap into talent pools. RecWorks is at the cutting edge of that movement and looking for new account executives to join the business.
4. Join the right team
You will be spending a great deal of your time at work, so you want to make sure that you will get on with the people that you work closely with. This could be the next two years, five years or ten years of your life. Companies generally have a common set of values that represent the culture of an organisation and the kind of people that work there. If those values are similar to your own then the chances are you will be very happy, if you find that you do not fit then the chances are you will not enjoy your time at the company.
TIP: Ask questions in your interview to find out as much as you can about the culture of the business. What do they see as their values? What is important to them when they hire staff?
@RecWorks: We invested a lot of time developing our company values. Drawing on qualities from our existing team, we wanted to ensure we retained certain values for all future hires.
Not only being nice,
but also being genuine
@RecWorks we value people being nice to one another, but also being 100% genuine.
Not only delivering a quality service,
but also striving for recommendations
@RecWorks we strive to deliver the kind of service that people tell their friends and colleagues about.
Not only having a good pitch,
but also believing actions speak louder than words
@RecWorks we do have a great pitch, but follow through on everything we promise.
Not only constantly trying new things,
but also progressively improving
@RecWorks we spend a lot of time coming up with new ways to solve the talent puzzle. The things that work we stick with.
Not only working hard,
but take accountability to get results
@RecWorks we are highly target-driven. From day one a lot of focus is placed on making sure individuals contribute true value to the business.
Not only community over cold calling,
but also giving back to the community
@RecWorks we are committed to investing time and money into the tech community as a way of building and developing relationships.
…and above all of this, we value respect
@RecWorks we see respect as our main value. We believe that with mutual respect everything is effortless, but with disrespect things are impossible. We respect our clients and our colleagues.
